ART ISLAND 2023
andriesse~eyck gallery is pleased to present a new body of work by multidisciplinary artist Silvia Gatti at Art Island.
Continuing her inquiries into the complex relationship between language, reality, and self, Gatti confronts some of the existential questions about human existence: What is the essence of being human? What is the product of our consciousness and what comes from our bodily experience? In recent years, Gatti has explored these questions through abstract poetry, conceptual drawings, and text-based video installations.
At Art Island, andriesse~eyck gallery will show a series of seven new large-format drawings. With titles such as Somewhere, Somewhere; I am you, and Are you [t]here? the drawings reflect the artist’s investigations into the experience of being human, with all its ambiguities, uncertainties, and paradoxes. Wrinkled and creased, the paper represents human skin, which, in turn, becomes an imaginative landscape, absorbing the events and multiple narratives that make up a person’s identity and life.
Human skin is often considered the threshold or interface between a person’s inner and outer world. In Gatti’s drawings crossed-out words fill up the blank spaces. ‘Are you t here?’ ‘A way in out in…’ The play with words becomes poetry: meditations on a thought, a feeling, an insignificant event.
Text, visual poetry, and soliloquy are a common feature in Gatti’s work. After working mainly in a minimalist, graphic black and white, Gatti has started to add colour to her vocabulary. In the new video work, Between Brackets, we again hear the rattle of keyboard strokes and a woman’s voice sharing fabulous tales and meditations on everyday life events, whilst the screen rhythmically flows through the colour spectrum. The introduction of colour as material allows the artist to experiment with new, more sensuous layers in her work, bringing in light and life.
Art Island will be held at Fort Island Ijmuiden, from 26 to 28 May.
