marijn van kreij / PICTORIAL CONTENT?
The processes of appropriation and repetition are a common thread running through the oeuvre of Dutch artist Marijn van Kreij (1978). The artist takes both iconic and lesser-known works from the 20th century and gives them a new context and form in the here and now. For Art Antwerp 2024, van Kreij brings together paintings on paper, drawings and collages made in the last ten years. He combines hand-drawn copies of artworks and illustrations from children’s books with cut-out fragments of text and uses fluid brushstrokes to apply paint to pages from art catalogues and magazines. Certain visual motifs, such as a window and a snail, recur in various forms. This year Marijn van Kreij had an extensive solo show "How to Look at a Spiral" at De Pont museum, Tilburg. Earlier exhibitions were amongst others: 'Meaning Making', Joseph Tang, Paris (2024); 'Nirvana', Secondroom, Antwerp (2023); 'Contemporary Presences', Museu Picasso, Barcelona (2029); 'The Painter', andriesse eyck galerie, Amsterdam (2019); 'Nude in the Studio', Marres, Maastricht /POST, Tokyo (2018), 'ABN AMRO kunstprijs', Hermitage Amsterdam (2017)
